There are some specific business goals that I have this year for 2017. One that I want to finish is the take and pass my exam to become a certified personal trainer. This is mainly to learn more about anatomy and how the body works. I meet students in yoga class who are taking yoga classes to balance out their gym life or their resistance training. I realized the school of teaching for Certified Personal Training is different from Yoga.
While I was doing some research on the different schools, I ended up going with NASM. I ended up looking and researching the 5 top known (when Googled for CPT Certificate).
My main points that I was looking for is:
- Credibility
- Cost
- Exam type
- Reputation
National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)
When I asked around, this one was the most brought up. From word of mouth or just experience of friends, NASM seemed to be the most popular choice.
When you sign up, they send you a book and a link to login to study online. I downloaded the pdf book and read on my tablet. That way I can study wherever I am.
The cost is about $1000. Continuing education required every two years. I will be taking my test around Feb. Not much time to study.
American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)
I think I’m turned off by the fact that there is a requirement for membership. This one has been around the longest.
American Council on Exercise (ACE)
This was the other one that I was trying to decide if I should go through mainly because I’ve heard the name of the program here and there. I don’t remember the source but I remember reading this one was slightly more outdated than NASM so that was why I decided against it.
National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA)
Again just with the membership.
International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA)
This one is not accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies where the rest are.
As I talk to more folks, I’ll update with more info.
