“the tallest oak in the forest is the tallest not just because it grew from the hardiest acorn; it is the tallest also because no other tress blocked its sunlight, the soil around it was deep and rich, no rabbit chewed through its bark as a sapling, and no lumberjack cut it down before it matured.”
This isn’t a secret, labor and sex trafficking happen today in our neighborhood. Yes, our neighborhood here in Orange County.
Last month, I was asked to speak about my experience and share information about how young adults can get more involved locally with helping this cause.
The Church showed a documentary called Nefarious and had a small break for individuals to get into small groups to discuss what they saw. The documentary is about a small religious groups that travel to four different countries to find out more information about trafficking in those places. I thought it was good that the documentary shared that depending on the geographical location of where the crime happens, the victims/survivors don’t always have the same reason for entering that realm of violence and abuse.
Since I was asked the night before this event to speak, I had to prepare and practice in a short amount of time. I wanted to get to the point. It was a late night, so many individuals just heard trafficking for the first time let alone the difficult details that come with it. I shared my experience with volunteering to Thailand and also my short and spotty volunteering with the Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force.
My goal was to share that the victims (at least locally) need compassion and love where it is currently replaced with neglect and abuse.
